How To Get Mewtwo In Legends ZA Encounter Requirements And Battle Tips

Capturing the iconic Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is one of the most exciting post-game challenges for trainers. Unlocking this special encounter requires completing prerequisite story milestones, redeeming key digital items, and navigating the subterranean levels of Lumiose City. With the right preparation and combat strategies, you can successfully defeat and capture Mewtwo to add its formidable power to your endgame roster.
Prerequisites and Unlocking Project M
Before you can face Mewtwo, you must first complete the main campaign of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and reach the roll of the end credits. Once the main story is finished, connect your console to the internet and access the Mystery Gift option in the in-game menu. Claiming the free Mystery Gift awards you both Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y, which automatically activates the special side mission known as Project M.
After receiving your Mega Stones, travel to the Lysandre Café located within Magenta Sector 2 in Lumiose City. Head inside the establishment and use the elevator to descend to floor B3F of Lysandre Labs. Proceed into the computer terminal area to trigger a cutscene where the laboratory systems react to your newly acquired Mega Stones, allowing you to release the security locks and summon Mewtwo.
Battle Strategy and Mewtwo Weaknesses
Mewtwo appears at Level 70 and possesses a high-powered moveset that includes Psychic, Psycho Cut, Amnesia, and Aura Sphere. Because Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type Pokémon, it is vulnerable to Ghost, Dark, and Bug-type attacks. Bringing a well-trained squad between Level 75 and 80 gives your team a significant advantage in surviving its offensive coverage.
Dark-type Pokémon are especially effective choices because they are completely immune to Mewtwo's primary Psychic-type moves. However, keep in mind that Mewtwo carries Aura Sphere, a Fighting-type attack that can deal heavy damage to certain Dark or Rock-type counters if you are not careful. Keeping your trainer moving and dodging telegraphed attacks during the active battle is critical to surviving the tight combat arena.
Catching Tips and Mega Evolution Rewards
To maximize your chances of catching Mewtwo, carefully whittle down its health until its HP bar is in the red. Applying status conditions such as Sleep or Paralysis will dramatically boost your capture rate without risking ongoing damage. Avoid inflicting Burn or Poison, as the turn-by-turn residual damage might cause Mewtwo to faint before you can throw a Poké Ball.
If Mewtwo faints or your trainer takes too much damage, the encounter will reset cleanly, allowing you to retry the battle as many times as needed. High-tier Poké Balls like Ultra Balls or Timer Balls are strongly recommended due to Mewtwo's low base catch rate. Once captured, you can equip your new Legendary partner with either Mewtwonite X or Mewtwonite Y to unleash Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y in future battles.
